At its recent meeting in June, the Board adopted its Strategic Plan for 2010–2012. The Strategic Plan refines and extends the previous plan and provides clear direction for the continued development of AOA over the next three years.

AOA–SSA PFET IN SPINE SURGERY

AOA and the Spine Society of Australia (SSA) have established a Post Fellowship Education and Training (PFET) program in spine surgery.
This program is being conducted jointly by AOA and SSA and is an exciting development in the relationship between the two organisations. The program will allow orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons who are trained in advanced aspects of spine surgery to participate in teaching and further education programs for young men and women of both disciplines.

An AOA Board resolution at the June Board meeting has signalled the commencement of a process that will see AOA's Head Office move from its present property in Macquarie Street, Sydney.
The capacity of the current premises is now inadequate, due to a growth in staff numbers resulting from the progressive maturation of AOA services. In addition, the premises have lost their collegiate attraction as a convenient meeting place for the AOA Board and the various committees, because of space limitations, a lack of windows and a mobile phone ‘black hole’. URGENT - VACANCY FOR AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON

A vacancy exists for an orthopaedic surgeon at the Whitlam Joint Replacement Centre, Fairfield Hospital, NSW, for six months beginning July 2010.
The position is ideally suited to an experienced surgeon wishing to train further in joint replacement surgery. Fairfield Hospital does in excess of 800 joint replacements a year.
The surgeon will be expected to run a theatre and look after the unit and junior registrars.

SET SELECTION UPDATE

This year 186 candidates applied for the 2011 SET program. Of these, 85 were eligible for the interview shortlist (combined CV + IDR score of 46/60) and approx 43-46 will be selected on 18 July 2010.
All selection administration has been coordinated and managed by AOA Head Office, with the assistance of regional RACS support staff and Regional Training Committee Chairmen. This huge task involved the double-marking of all CV applications, processing of 1860 individual referee emails, preparation of national interview requirements, correspondence to candidates and result management. AOA REGISTRARS 2010 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The 2010 AOA Registrars Annual Conference will be held at the McCracken Country Club, Victor Harbor, SA, from Thursday 14 October to Sunday 17 October, following on from the AOA ASM.
The theme of the Registrars meeting will be Sports Orthopaedics, and the conference will include instructional course lectures on uppoer and lower limb topics. Read more

The third wave of the MABEL (Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life) survey has gone live.
MABEL is a major national, longitudinal survey of doctors that aims to make a difference. Funded by the NHMRC and conducted by the University of Melbourne and Monash University, the first and second waves of MABEL were conducted in 2008 and 2009. Read more
