A New Way to Communicate with Members

John BattenWelcome to our inaugural eNewsletter, which will be emailed to Members each month. It is intended to provide a snapshot of current issues and news in a concise, easy-to-read format. Further information will often be available on the AOA website (click through via the relevant link) and some topics will be discussed in greater depth in the Bulletin. In the recent Budget, the Federal Government announced a cost-recovery measure to fund the National Joint Replacement Registry (NJRR). Legislation has recently been passed by Parliament that will place a levy on companies which have prostheses listed on the Prostheses List... Read more

HTA Review

AOA recently provided a submission to the Federal Government’s review of Health Technology Assessment (HTA).

The submission, which can be viewed here, highlights the significant contribution of AOA Members to the HTA processes that relate to medical devices. Members provide expert orthopaedic input to the Prostheses and Devices Committee, its various clinical advisory groups and panels, the Medical Services Advisory Committee, and the Therapeutic Goods Administration through representation on the Medical Device Evaluation Committee and advice from the Orthopaedic Expert Working Group... All Members should have received an invitation to opt in to receive the AOA Annual Report, including a form to fill in and return to AOA, if you wish to receive it. If necessary, download the Annual Report Form.
 
The Report can be sent as an electronic version (email) or a hardcopy printed version (post). Please complete and return the form to AOA by 30 June 2009.

ASM program nearly complete!

The final program for the AOA ASM to be held in Cairns between 11 and 15 October 2009 has almost been completed. A record number of abstracts has been received and the standard appears to be exceedingly high. This promises to be quite a scientific festival.
 
Special plenary sessions have been arranged to excite, entertain and educate. One such session will be entitled ‘Ratcheting up a Fortune – Is There Fraudulent Use of CMBS Item Numbers?’ This is a topic which may well ruffle a few feathers! Recent media reports have made oblique references to the billing practices of some medical practitioners. The session will contain contributions from orthopaedic surgeons, Medicare representatives and a psychoanalyst. This is one session you just can’t afford to miss... Read more
